Reorganizing Criminal Justice Agencies

I stated in my very first blog that New Orleans has entirely too many law enforcement agencies to have to request mutual aid from outside the parish. Tell me how you'd feel about having a system of agencies like in New York? All of the different agencies could maintain their leadership, all while answering to one civilian Police Commissioner. This would ensure that all of the involved agencies had and worked towards the same goal. It would also ensure equal respect amongst agencies.

Offer your opinions.

  1. I can think of 8 outside agencies off the top of my head. If they were allowed to help in a little way we could have more officers in the high crime areas. If citizens evaluated their situation before calling for the police officers could be spared for more serious situations. I learned in my police process class that people call the police because they can. We (911/police) will answer 24/7 and they are obligated to come out. If a situation isnt a police matter the citizen can't be refused the police and they that's valuable time waisted that the police don't have enough off as is.
Citizens complain about New Orleans not being JP and they're right, NO isn't JP. JP have more officers, resources, and money, 3 things that New Orleans doesn't have. JP have the assistance of the LSP when it comes with their calls on the interstate. Some assistance would be better than no assistance when it comewith the NOPD. The department needs a lot of help and the help nor change isn't going to come overnight. I still believe in my department.

    1. Citizens have always played on the police and other emergency responders. The first time we stop answering the b.s. calls and the news media is going to have a field day. Hey citizens, your neighbor's barking dog is not a police matter, DOGS ARE SUPPOSED TO BARK!!!

We could have LSP in New Orleans as well. Problem is for so long we've made it seem like we don't need anybody but NOPD. We had problems back in the day with that attitude and we're having even more problems now. There's no need to have a Mutual Aid chapter in the Ops Manual if we're not going to use it.

You must also remember that JP is the tax collector for the entire parish.

  2. Again, see the work of the OPSO court deputy who authored several academic works on local law enforcement in New Orleans. He had the number of local law enforcement agencies at 17.
